Our Good. Works. Wednesday (GWW) efforts continue! Finding local charities to support each month has reignited our love and appreciation for our community and the hard work so many people are doing behind the scenes. If you’re unfamiliar with GWW, it’s simple. 20% of all non-custom sales at Penny Post and Red Barn Mercantile on any given Wednesday will be donated to a nonprofit organization. We spotlight a different charity every Wednesday.
This month we’ll be donating to charities that support students in our community. Every Wednesday in September, 20% of sales will be donated to the following organizations.
September 7: The Alexandria Tutoring Consortium is an organization that recruits and trains volunteers to teach reading to kindergarten and first grade public school students. ATC’s goal is to ensure that all of its students read on or above grade level by the end of first grade. If you'd like to become a tutor, register here!
September 14: RunningBrooke works to level the learning field for traditionally overlooked students in Alexandria City Public Schools. They provide teachers and students simple yet revolutionary tools that inspire movement in the classroom and throughout the day to prime the brain for learning.
September 21: Project Discovery of Alexandria prepares and motivates low income and first generation college-eligible students to access opportunities in higher education. Through workshops and trips to college campuses, they provide vital information about how to set and achieve educational goals.
September 28: Fly Minds is organized to serve as a youth development non-profit. Its purpose is to provide students, ages 9-14 years of age, free and structured educational, real-life, hands-on programs. Their programs include science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) activities; community service; outdoor recreation, photography, music, and art. The programs are developed to expand their understanding and awareness of the opportunities available to them.
