The Peacock Room Postcard
The Peacock Room at the Freer Gallery of Art (part of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art) is a stunning masterpiece of aesthetic decoration.
Once a month, on the third Thursday, visitors can witness a special moment when staff members open the room's elaborate shutters, allowing natural light to flood the space and illuminate its gold-leafed walls and shelves of ceramics. The scene is rendered in loose, sketchy lines that capture the room's intricate peacock motifs and the play of shadows across its rich green-blue walls. The famous painted peacocks, created by James McNeill Whistler, seem to come alive in the changing light, their iridescent feathers shimmering against the golden walls.
